The Olympics of Shame and Games

The in turn hilarious and sobering images of the Beijing Olympics protesters being rugby tackled by the London police and by the Chinese Olympic torch 'Protectors' provided a gargantuan meal for thought.

In addition to to continuing Terminal 5 chaos London is really not coming across very well to our international neighbours and interested parties. Am I alone in asking why there is such a prominent leg of the Olympic torch relay in the UK? Maybe the organisers should have chosen different torch bearers. The terrified accounts of the young teenagers who were involved made me think that their selection was not the brightest idea. It should have been a joyous occasion for them. Instead these school kids ran a gauntlet of hate. A few hefty rugby players and boxers would have been a better choice.

What to do? London needs to get it's act together. As sure as night follows day, neither Boris Johnson nor Ken 'Scratch My Back and I'll Scratch Yours' Livingstone will bring the glory back. Particularly now that they are in the final straight of their tepid battle for the London mayorship every utterance is syrupy and designed to curry favour (i.e. lies) and even worse, these lines are fed by well paid image consultants and PR folk.

Here's pining for Wimbledon -even minus Tim Henman- to bring some joy and class back to the city.
