The Brits...What a Show..or Should That be Spectacle?

I am not quite sure what to make of the reports that I have read and seen regarding last night's (21/02/2008) Brits. Are public decorum and decency frowned upon by singing folk these days?

The count of the sober who presented and won awards would not have tested a four-fingered man. A harmless example would be the likeable Alan Carr who admitted inebriation and was charming with it and -importantly- not fluffing his slot, slurring or embarrassing himself. The worst case of drunkenness was the usual rapier sharp and witty Vic Reeves, reduced to a profanity punchbag by Sharon Osbourne who -with all the care and circumspection of an NF supporting, shaven-headed football hooligan told Mr Reeves to piss off for being a piss head and that he was a b***ard! Charming. The Arctic Monkeys must have been drunk to act as arrogant (an abysmal attempt at aloof style and preening glamour) as they did.

However, the biscuit, indeed the cookie, was saved overwhelmingly for Miss Amy Winehouse. I have read many blog comments by those who have attended her recent concerts and showcases and complained bitterly at the shambolic nature of her performances; off-key singing, slurring, disappearing and apparent drug-taking on stage no less! All the reports I have read of her two performances last night were very supportive. I am confused. She had the wild-eyed countenance of Samuel L. Jackson's crack head in Jungle Fever. She looked like the kid who is forced to sing and dance in front of mum and dad's chums at an evening party. She didn't seem sure footed and grabbed and gripped at her skirt like a nervous teenager. Did I see something different? I thought that this young lady needs to be sedated immediately and told to relax for a few months. If this is what she is like of the hard drugs then her future performances will be the stuff of YouTube legend for a long time to come.

In short, with the big US start -such as Kanye West- not bothering to turn up, it seemed as if the home stars contented (or should that be comforted) themselves with the free booze that must have been in hilariously large supply. Maybe the TV folk wanted the woefully short 30 second delay to guarantee these shenanigans. Strewth!
